Diary
While performances are on hold, I am working on a set of piano pieces. I am dedicating each one to a different person. I started with my sister Alison. I’m going to take one of her favorite songs (Sunshine On My Shoulders?) and base the piece on that. Not variations, exactly — that’s too formal. I’ll somehow make the song my own but keep it recognizable.
I also started one for my cousin Carrie. This will be a pattern/pulse piece. It starts with a single note repeated in a dance rhythm. I layer other notes on top with cross-accents and chromatic harmony. This leads to a minor key melody. We’ll see where it goes after that. That’s the fun part about pulse pieces, the initial pattern is so suggestible but the chain of logic could lead anywhere.
